Congratulations,everyone,you’vemadeit.
Afteralltheyearsofworkandeffort,allthemanyhoursspenthunchedoveryourdesks,allthehomework,afterallofthat,you’refinishingschoolthissummerandyoudeserveeverypraiseandcelebrationpossible.Because,let’sfaceit,thisafinalyearlikenoother.YourlastmonthsofschoolhavecoincidedwiththegreatestcrisisourcountryhasfacedsincetheSecondWorldWar.
AndsothefirstthingIwanttosayisthankyou.Thankyoufortheincredibleeffortyou’veputintodoingtherightthingoverthepastweeksandmonths.Itwasyoureducationthatwasdisrupted,yourlivesthatweredisrupted.Andnow,asmanyofyouaremissingoutonceagainonpartiesandfestivals,presentations,perhapsevenlong-plannedholidays,Iwantyoutoknowthatyoureffortshavebeenworthit.Becauseofyou,becauseofyoursacrifice,we’vesavedhundredsofthousandsoflives.Andthat’snotsomethingmanygenerationswillbeabletosayabouttheirfinalweeksatschool–notyoureldersiblings,certainlynotyourparents.
Infact,oneday,manyyearsfromnow,peoplearegoingtolookback,andtheyaregoingtoaskyouwhatitwasliketolivethroughthelockdown.Andwhileyoumightnothavetalesofalostsummerofmusicfestivalsandhouseparties,youwillbeabletotalkwithpridenotjustofthelivesyouhelpedsavebutofthecountryyouhelpedrebuild.
Becausewhilethisstageofyourlife,thisveryimportantstageofyourlife,isdrawingtoaclose,thereallyexcitingbitisyettocome.Thesepastyears,yourbrilliantteachershaveequippedyouwiththeskillsyouneedtochangetheworldandnowyouhavetheopportunitytodoso.Becauseaswefacethechallengeofreopeningoursociety,cautiously,carefully,wehaveanincredibleopportunitytodothingsdifferently,tobuildbackbetternotjustforthenextfewmonthsbutforyearsanddecadestocome.Yourgenerationthatcameofageandperhapshadtogrowupabitfasterduringthispandemic,yourgenerationaregoingtobeso,sovitaltothatnationalefforttorebuildbecausewe’regoingtoneedbright,brilliantyoungpeoplelikeyou.Andthatstrengthofcharacter,the…thequalitiesthatyouforgedduringthelockdown–empathy,resilience,self-discipline,patience–thosearequalitieswe’regoingtoneednowaswemakeoursocietyfairer,makeouraircleaner,stopourplanetgettingwarmer.Andthosearequalitiesthataregoingtocarryyouforwardsandupwardsandmakeyouoneofthemostimportantandinfluentialgenerationsinthepeacetimehistoryofournation.
Yourjourneyforwardwillnotalwaysbeeasy.Therearealwaysgoingtobepeoplewhowanttopourabucketofcoldwateronyourideas;peoplewholiketositonthesidelines,criticize,sometimeswithgoodcause,sometimesforthesakeofcriticizing,andofcourse,youmaymakesomemistakes.Buttheimportantthingistogetoutthere,tokeeppickingyourselfup,tokeeptryingagainandagain,andasourgreatestleadermayormaynothavesaidonce,never,never,nevergivein.Jumponeveryopportunitythatcomesyourway,rugbytacklethatopportunitytothefloor,bringenthusiasm,energytoeverythingthatyoudo.Bethatfriend,thatteammember,whoisalwaystheretolendsomeoneelseahelpinghand.Takethetimetoaskothershowthey’redoing.Bekindtoallthosearoundyou.
Andwhenyoulookaround,lookforthegood.Becausewhilethiscrisishasbroughtgreatgriefandsadnesstomanyhomesacrossthecountry,there’vebeenmanybrilliantanddeterminedpeoplewhohavealsoshownthiscountryatits…atitsbest.Theincrediblewillingnessofallthosewhoputuptheirhandstohelpoutandvolunteer,theBritishcompaniesthatleaptintoactiontohelpoutandbuildthe…theventilators,scientistsworkingflatoutonpossibletreatmentsandvaccines,andthewaysomanyincrediblepeoplekeptoutcountrygoingthroughoutthepandemic.
Yourgenerationhascomeofagefacingachallengelikenoothergenerationbeforeyou.Andjustaspreviousgenerationshavehadtheirownmissions:thewartimegenerationthatrebuiltBritaininthe1950s,thosewhofoughtforgreaterrightsandequalityinthe1960sand70s.Yourmissionwillbetomakeyourwayintheworld,aswebuildbackabetter,fairerBritain.
Iknowthisyearhasn’tendedthewayyouwantedittoandIknowyou’llnevergetbackthepastfewmonthsorenjoytheexperiencesthatyouhopedto,butIpromiseyouithasbeenworthit.AndIcan’twaittoseethegreatnewworldthatyou’regoingtohelpusbuild.
